‘Is the Is are’ by DIIV sounds like a meeting between the velvety indie pop of Real Estate - or perhaps The Cure or The Smiths - and shoegaze bands like The Horrors or Viet Cong, but with more noise.

The Brooklyn group’s album teams up well with the soft wines of Maison Coquard. It’s easily one of the best combos of the year: fresh and fruity.

It’s a very ambitious album by singer Zachary Cole Smith, the tortured singer, who gives it his best on ‘Is the Is are’. ‘Dopamine’ is aptly named whilst ‘Valentine’, which is somewhat reminiscent of Foals, will quickly become your go-to track: rhythmic and motivating. Songs like ‘Bent (Roi’s Song)’ and ‘Under the Sun’ will transport you to another place. The album pairs naturally with the fleshy, fruity Beajolais.
